Making Your Digital Camera Battery Last Longer
With all the features digital cameras have these days, you may find keeping batteries a problem. This could well be your biggest expense, but there are some things you can do to increase the length of time your batteries stay charged. Let’s start with the three biggest sources of power drain. The LCD screen takes up the most power. It is possible to turn this feature off unless you really feel the need for it. Using the camera’s viewfinder will conserve power. Another big power drain is the flash. Whenever you can, use natural lighting to take your photos and turn off the flash. This will help save your battery for times when you absolutely need the flash. A third drain on your battery is constantly using your zoom. It takes more power zooming in and out than it does keeping your zoom at a steady place. Try to find a setting you like and sticking with it as much as possible.. If you don’t plan on moving around a lot and are near an outlet, the AC adapter will increase the life of your batteries. 'Extreme contrast found in ozone losses at North, South Poles'
A new study shows a dramatic loss of the ozone in the Antarctic over the past 20 years as compared to the same phenomenon in the Arctic, added the local ozone depletion in Antarctic at some altitudes frequently exceeded 90 percent and more.
The study found "massive" and "widespread" localized ozone depletion in the heart of Antartica's ozone hole region, beginning in the late 1970s, but becoming more pronounced in the 1980s and 90s.
The US government scientists who conducted the study said on Monday that there was an almost complete absence of ozone in certain atmospheric air samples taken after 1980, compared to earlier decades.
In contrast, the ozone losses in the Arctic were sporadic, and even the greatest losses did not begin to approach the regular losses in the northern hemisphere, the researchers said.
"Typically the Arctic loss is dramatically less than the Antarctic loss," said Robert Portmann, an atmospheric scientist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in Boulder, Colorado.
Scientists have been tracking the expanding ozone hole over Antarctica for some 20 years now.
In October, NASA scientists reported that this year's hole is the biggest ever, stretching over nearly 11 million square miles.
In Antarctica, local ozone depletion at some altitudes frequently exceeded 90 percent, and often reached up to 99 percent during the Antarctic winter in the period after 1980 compared to earlier decades, the researchers said.
In the Arctic, the losses occasionally peaked at 70 percent, and some losses of 50 percent were seen in the mid 1990s, when temperatures were particularly low, but the scale and scope of the problem was much less than what was seen in the Northern Hemisphere.

Supernova leads to questions about death of stars
Astronomers have discovered a distant supernova, or exploded star, so large that it will force scientists to question their understanding of how certain older stars disintegrate.Scientists have believed that dying stars known as ‘’white dwarfs'’ can’t expand to more than 1.4 times the size of our sun without exploding in a massive thermonuclear blast.That rule, known as the ‘’Chandrasekhar Limit,'’ has served as the foundation of decades of astrophysical research and helped scientists estimate the size of the universe.But a team of astronomers on 20th September said that they have found a supernova in a galaxy 4 billion light years away that reached a mass twice that of the sun before exploding.‘’It should not be possible to break this limit but nature has found a way,'’ said Andy Howell, the University of Toronto researcher who discovered the supernova.‘’Now we have to figure out how nature did it,'’ Howell said in a statement.The star could have been spinning so fast that centrifugal force pushed it beyond the usual limit, Howell and other researchers said.The explosion also could have come from two white-dwarf stars merging.
